Adelaide sat on her bunk bed watching Brock as he placed candles on the window sills and table. With the flickering of the hutâs small fire, it felt warm and intimate.
âMy mind is working overtime trying to work out how I could capture images of the bats or the kiwi. I think I may be able to pull it off. If I usedââ
âHey,â Brock said, taking her hand and pulling her up off the bed. âI think youâre incredible.â And then he covered her lips with his own. His tongue, sensually dancing with hers, swirled as his hands pinned her against him. When he eventually broke their connection, he leaned his forehead against hers.
âI donât know what it is about you; youâre like a drugâthe more I have, the more I want,â he admitted.
âI feel the same way,â she whispered, more to herself than to him.
He pulled her head into his shoulder and held it there.
âHow will this even work?â Adelaide asked.
âI donât know. All I know is that I want you in my life. You make things I thought were important, insignificant. Things that defined me yesterday, today suddenly have no relevance. Iâve never met anyone like you before.â
âIâve never met anyone like you, either.â She looked up into his eyes. âWhat happens when I have to go home?â
âDo you really have to go home? Whatâs so important that you couldnât live here with me? Make Jackson Bay your base.â
He was asking the impossible, despite how much she wanted it too. âI have responsibilities.â
âWhat responsibilities?â
âI have a job and a flat in Wellington. My friends are there.â
âSo, get another job down here.â
âDoing what? Working on the fishing boats? I travel a lot on assignment, and I have an employer who lets me take off for weeks at a time. Wellington has an international airport and great public transport. Itâs easy to leave and to come home to.â But as she reeled off the excuses for not moving to Jackson Bay, they sounded exactly like excuses, even to her ears.
âUse this place to come home to. Come home to me.â
âI wish I couldââ But before she could finish, his lips were smothering hers, as if he had to try and persuade her to change her mind, that she was more important to him than anything else. And she wanted to feel the same way about him, but she hardly knew him, and he didnât know her at all.
He was wearing her down, confusing her. She wanted to forget everything in her past and go with the here and now. Enjoy what was blossoming between them, and not worry about tomorrow. Forget about the past. But she needed this assignment to propel her back among the best of the best in the business, and if her plans worked out, sheâd be traveling a lot more than she was now.
âLetâs just enjoy whatâs happening now, take one day at a time.â Thatâs all she could offer him and she knew it wouldnât be enough.
